Stanislaus County Supervisor Mani Grewal will be reelected to a second full term, turning back challenger Rally Valenzuela, incomplete returns suggest late Tuesday in June primary voting.

Grewal, with 76.5%, was leading Valenzuela (23.5%) in their race to represent the heart of Modesto and Del Rio in county supervisor district 4. The Modesto businessman was first appointed to the seat in 2020 and reelected in 2022.

With tens of thousands of ballots yet to tally, early returns as of June 3 showed:

  • The feisty race between incumbent Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil and challenger Alexandra Duarte, both Republicans, was too close to call. As of midnight Duarte held a slight lead with 32.7% to Alvarado-Gil’s 28.1%. The eventual victor will face Democrat Jaron Brandon (39.1%) in the November midterm in right-leaning state Senate District 4.
  • Republican incumbent Heath Flora (30.1%) and Democratic challenger Matthew Adams (24.6%) may be headed to November in Assembly District 9, unless Republican Jim Shoemaker (23.8%) surges in late ballots to be among the top two. Also in the race were Republican Brandon Owen with 9.3%, Democrat Michael Perez with 9.1% and Republican Tami Nobriga with 3.2%.
  • Incumbent Rep. Adam Gray, D-Merced (40.9%), will face Republican Kevin Lincoln (29.1%) in November for CA-13, unless Republican Vin Kruttiventi (16.6%) can overcome Lincoln in the ballot count. Democrat Daniel Garibay Rodriguez received 13.4%.
  • Longtime incumbent GOP Rep. Tom McClintock was trouncing his challengers with nearly 63.1% and will square off against Democrat Michael Masuda (22.7%) of Riverbank in the fall for 5th Congressional District. They were outpacing Democrat Mike Barkley (9.1%) and Republican Dan Stroud (5.1%) in early returns.

Measure J, a special tax for fire protection services in Salida, Wood Colony and Del Rio, needed two thirds approval and appeared headed to defeat with only 46.2% “yes” votes, according to early returns.

Counting in past elections has taken weeks to complete.

Although all ballots can be returned via mail in California, only 16.9% of Stanislaus registered voters had done so before Tuesday. Tens of thousands of voters cast ballots on Election Day in drop boxes or vote center booths. Elections officials also must count ballots mailed in recent days that arrive this week as long as they were postmarked before or on Tuesday.

Also winning Tuesday for lack of an opponent were Republican Assemblyman Juan Alanis of Modesto (District 22) and Stanislaus County Supervisor Terry Withrow, whose District 3 runs west of Modesto and includes Salida.
